Aloha sir, i’ve been watching your channel for years, and have been binge re watching a lot of your content lately. I just got a Traditions percussion Kentucky Long rifle kit, finished it up and have been hunting sheep with it, and will soon be adventuring after goats. Bagged two sheep already😆. I want you to know that you’ve been a big help recently, and given me much inspiration over the years. I hope you are doing well, and that life’s been easier on you. Take care!

Can't tell much speed difference, but lot less sparks with null b and 3f, I'll be sticking to those as a lefty shooting a right hand lock simply because of that

Great video. I live in Florida; Wife doesn't want it stored in the air-conditioned house. my only opinion is the garage. but gets 100 degrees or more in there. I keep in a similar wooden box. on the ground floor. what are your thoughts on the dangers?

I was 2 mar div 86 thru 90. 3/6 kilo co. What was your unit? listening to this I have another simularity. 3 years ago my 12 year olds (my youngest) and I were playing wi8th a can of 4f Goex making little piles and burning with a trail of about 4 feet. Piles abot the size of a serving of Peas for dinner. 5 minutes after one of several piles was pouring another pile and there oas one ember unseen by me obviously. as I was pouring it shot up the stuff spilling out of the can so fast from about 3.5 feet and exploded the can in my left hand. Blew the square metal can round and blew out the top and bottom. Loud as hell kaboom. Scorched my jeans but otherwise unhurt just a little rattled. my youngest who watched it from maybe 10 feet away Thought I had to be hurt, but nope not a scratch. Where in Tennessee are you from? My mom's people are from stewart county, Dover mostly. Would be interesting if another coincidence. I got a vibr yhoiu'll be good to go on the cancer thing. I hate all these lawyers trying to make a buck of folks at Lejeune that may have peen toxified by the water, and one of the effects they say was kidney bladder or prostate Cancer they tout the years fro the 50's to 80's, Possibly you were there during what ever that window was but it's worth a shot, if you haven't already looked in to it. Yup VA sux bigly Semper Fi mac or as I like to say Simpli-fy

I've been hunting deer with percussion for 30+years and aside from the load in the gun I'll carry 2or 3 speedloads (I like the T/C best)in shirt pocket and a belt knife and pocket knife , flashlight to get in and out and stay off of snakes , a piece of rope for a drag if I get lucky . Just about every thing can fit in my pockets .

I've been shooting percussion for 30+ years and been thinking about a flintlock. This helps but concerned about the humidity where I live affecting the pan charge.

On a humid day I do what they did originally when the gun needed to be charged for any length of time. Seal the pan closed with a little bees wax. 👍🏻

I use a round whiskey flask that's tough and water tight. And in the center is a tin shot cup that comes out, holds precut patches. But that's all back up. I make premeasured loads in pop top containers that held diabetic test strips. They fit in a shot shell belt. Waterproof, pop the hinged lid and dump down barrel.

Hey Bob thanks your great Beginners series. New to Black powder have a 40 cal Lancaster style flintlock. After your video on finding twist rate looks like she's 1:48. Atm I shoot 395 cal round balls with 010 lubed patch 50gr 3fg powder and she does good out to 100m. ( palm sized groups) would I be able to shoot minnie balls and if so what starting charge would you recommend

So i wamt to ask as i guess i was told wrong. I have the same hammer you so and have sharpened my dlints a couple times to good success it seems. I was told to use the pointed side of the brass hammer and strike edge to edge. Like two swords. That way you end up creating small circular like saw teeth in the flint as you go across the edge. Have you ever heard of anyone doing it this way? Its worked for me although it doesnt take off too much material and actually seems to ding up the edged side of the hammer but what are your thought's?

If you mess up drilling your touch-hole or buy a rifle second hand that has the touch-hole drill too low or too far forward or back you can easily fix it. Most locks have enough metal thickness around the pan that you can take the lock off the gun and working from the back side of the lock use a dremel tool and a grinding burr to grind the pan a little deeper or remove a little metal on one side of the pan or the other to center the touch-hole up on the pan. It's a ten minute job that anyone who is the least bit handy with tools can do.

I'm toting a possibles bag everywhere, fire kit, stainless steel canteen/bottle, emergency blanket, knife, and some kind of cordage for ANY expedition in an outdoors environment, but a decent sized belt pouch holds that, plus your cleaning stuff.

The 1:48 twist in a TC (is a compromised configuration) has shallow rifling so the conical bullet can seal in the bore and still allow a PRB (patched round ball) to hold the rifling at lower powder charges. When higher powder charges are used with patched round ball the rifling and grove depth is needed for the patch to hold the rifling.
